ABOUT THE TRAINING
Some of us want to use Playback Theatre as a tool for Social Justice. This can be done - and in our opinion should be done - anytime we can.
Conducting means to guide a process and not just opening the space for those who want to speak and listening to them. As conductors we are the representatives of our team, we embody our stands, our principles and are responsible for what will be invited and accepted during the performance.
It is a tough place but it is a necessary step if we want to bring more equity and access in our communities.
In this workshop we will learn how to conduct a performance with the purpose of creating a positive social impact on our audience. At first, we will investigate our own experience with oppression and privilege, discovering where we stand in the spectrum of all different human identities and their intersections.
Then, once we have acknowledged our identities and owned them, we will train on how to conduct the Playback Theatre performance with the goal of bringing up the topic of injustice, prejudice and oppression. While doing this, we will bear in mind the principle of giving space to those voices who are less heard, trying to bring a new balance among people who have a lot of access and those who don't.
Part of this work is to become aware of our representation, which means that our team might represent a part of the community and other parts not. We will dedicate some time to this topic too.
All this will be unpacked working though the metaphor of the Narrative Reticulation, a principle that gives us the basic elements that a Playback performance needs. Our aim is to build bridges and find a way of doing Playback Theatre that can give voice to everyone of us.
