ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
As Playback Theatre performers we are asked to listen deeply to other people’s stories and improvise them immediately, connecting to our creativity, intuition and our own feelings.
As much as we can be empathic and tune in with the emotions contained in the stories, sometimes we might not accurately portray what the teller shared. Usually, this happens when the essence of a story is not perfectly clear, its boundaries are not in focus for us.
In this workshop we will explore the boundaries of the ritual of Playback Theatre in every dimension.
What are the spatial boundaries of the stage we perform in?
Which is the ritual framework that we cannot break while performing?
What are the physical boundaries amongst actors on stage?
Which are the boundaries of the story we have to play back? How far can we go in detail or in abstraction?
When is it that we are overdelivering or underdelivering a story?
When are we crossing the boundary between what is our personal resonance of the story and what was actually contained in it?
When is it ok to play back a “hidden” meaning of a story, even if it was not explicitly shared? How far can we go with it?
From last year’s workshop in Hamburg
In this 2-day workshop we will learn how to listen more deeply, with our whole body, in order to find in it the right input to give an appropriate response to a story. When we truly listen, when we are open to receive the resonance from our senses, our playback performance can only be true, spontaneous and genuine.
Once we learn how to truly listen, the confusion around the boundaries of stories disappears. Our bodies know.
Along with this artistic and ritual exploration, we will give space to express which our own personal boundaries are. We will have some moments entirely dedicated to expressing how we deal with this topic in our lives.
